AMTC Dresden starts up new large-scale heat pump

Milestone on the path to climate neutrality

Dresden, 5 June 2025 – The Advanced Mask Technology Centre (AMTC) in Dresden officially commissioned a new large-scale heat pump today. With this measure, the company is replacing a large part of its previous natural gas consumption with renewable energies and taking another important step towards climate neutrality by 2035.

The new heat pump has a heating capacity of 1.7 MW and a cooling capacity of 1.2 MW. With a current COP (coefficient of performance) of around 4 – with the aim of increasing this to 5 in the coming months – it enables efficient energy supply to the AMTC. The system operates with five compressors for step-by-step control and is backed up by existing natural gas boilers in the event of maintenance work or failures.

The ceremonial commissioning took place in a small but significant setting. Guests included Frank Kromer, member of the Saxon State Parliament and the Committee for Economic Affairs, Labour, Energy and Climate Protection, as well as Stefan Wenzel from Dresden Economic Development (SGL Corporate Customer Consulting). The SPIE Energy Solutions project team was also represented – with Daniel Depta (Senior Sales Manager) and Peter Warsow (Project Manager Engineering North-East) as key implementation partners.

The symbolic starting signal for the new large-scale heat pump was given at the push of a button, which not only activated the technology but also marked the next step towards a climate-friendly future.

‘With the new heat pump, we are sending a clear signal about our sustainability strategy and showing that industrial precision and climate protection can go hand in hand,’ explains Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director of AMTC.

AMTC has been pursuing a consistent sustainability strategy for years. It switched to green electricity back in 2018. The goal is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions to zero by 2035. Significant savings have already been achieved through measures such as installing the heat pump and optimising heat regulation.
